Integrated Research Training Group

The research of the CRC 1316 is based on doctoral researchers that are educated to reach a solid expertise in the very interdisciplinary field of transient atmospheric non-equilibrium plasmas and their interfaces to solids and liquids. The support of early career researchers (ECR) is targeted at the individual academic levels ranging from master students, doctoral researchers, to independent PostDocs. The ultimate goal is to generate/qualify independent responsible researchers that are embedded in an international network. This goal is realized by the establishment of an integrated research training group (MGK) consisting of lectures, training workshop, and hands-on exercises for the ECRs.

The MGK is the central platform to build up the interdisciplinary expertise among the doctoral researchers at the interfaces between plasma physics – surface science – (surface) chemistry – biology. Doctoral researchers with a background in plasma physics are asked to attend a targeted training in solid-state physics, biology, and chemistry, and vice versa. Accordingly, doctoral researchers from other research fields join the corresponding lectures. All courses will also be open to local students as well as taught in English in order to include international students. Furthermore, these courses will serve as a local advertisement for the CRC 1316 and as a networking platform for master students and new doctoral researchers. First contact between the CRC 1316 and promising PhD candidates is made, who can be motivated to apply for a position within the CRC. These courses are also highly attractive for incoming students who are offered the whole range of welcome and orientation services by the international office of the Ruhr-Universit ¨ at Bochum prior to and upon arrival – in particular accommodation, legal advice, intercultural awareness, and access to language courses. The lectures are given by the PI or invited experts. It is also combined with some hands on exercises, which are either demonstration experiments on diagnostics, or lecture hall programming courses on available simulation tools.

The MGK builds on the expertise from coordinating the European graduate school MC-ITN RAPID on reactive atmospheric pressure plasma science (2013-2017) as well as on the integrated training school of the SFB-TR 87 (2010- ). The training program of the CRC 1316 is complementary to that of the SFB-TR 87 dealing with low pressure plasmas, because the focus in the CRC 1316 is on atmospheric pressure plasmas and on (plasma) chemistry. The basic courses on the fundamentals on plasma diagnostics, the fundamentals of modelling, or fundamental knowledge in chemistry will be joint events of all research consortia at RUB. By continuous and long-standing development at RUB in supporting early career researchers formats like international workshops, monitoring of the ECR progress by career development plans (CDP), and annual progress reports (APR), as well as mentoring for the ECRs by PIs in academia and industry are well established procedures at RUB.

The offers of the MGK are complemented by the RUB Research School on campus at RUB and by the Research Academy Ruhr as an umbrella of the offers of the univeristy in the Ruhr area.


Virtuelles MGK-Kolloqium 2022

Mit Beginn der zweiten Förderperiode wurden alle Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden der Projekte des SFB 1316 eingeladen, am jährlichen MGK-Kolloquium teilzunehmen. Das Kolloquium fand am 7. und 8. März 2022 online statt und wurde von Maximilian Klich (Projekt A8) und David Schulenberg (Projekt A4) organisiert.

Das Kolloquium diente der Vorstellung der vielen neuen Doktoranden, die dem SFB 1316 in seiner zweiten Förderperiode beitreten. Ohne die Teilnahme der Projektleiter wurde eine zwanglose Atmosphäre für den Austausch von wissenschaftlichen Kenntnissen und Interessen zwischen den Doktoranden geschaffen. Hier konnten sie sich und ihre Projekte vorstellen sowie in Vorträgen oder einer Posterpräsentation einen kurzen Überblick über ihre Projektergebnisse und Zukunftspläne geben. Die Vorträge zu den verschiedenen Forschungsthemen Modellierung, DBD/RF-Entladungen und Plasmen in Flüssigkeiten wurden von den eingeladenen Referenten gehalten und boten eine abgerundete Erfahrung.

Die neue Förderperiode erforderte auch einige Neuwahlen, nämlich die Position des Doktorandensprechers, die bisher Maximilian Klich innehatte, sowie eine Position im Gender Board des SFB 1316, die Lars Schücke (Projekt A7) und Katharina Grosse (Projekt B7) innehatten. Der neu gewählte PhD-Sprecher ist David Schulenberg und Stefanie Bogenrieder (Projekt B4) sowie Lukas Forschner (Projekt B12) sind die neuen Vertreter im Gender Board.

MGK Aktivität

Großes Kolloquium für April 2021 geplant

Als MGK-Aktivität des SFB 1316 für alle Doktoranden sowie PostDocs des Sonderforschungsbereichs wird ein Kolloquium organisiert, das in einem Konferenzzentrum stattfindet. Das Programm ist für zwei Tage in einem Konferenzzentrum geplant. Das Kolloquium findet im Rahmen eines informellen Formats statt, so dass intensive Diskussionen und Fragen entstehen können.

Zugehörige Doktoranden oder PostDocs aus dem SFB-TR 87 sowie aus kooperierenden Instituten sind willkommen.

Das Kolloquium ist für den 21.04. bis 22.04.2021 in Maria in der Aue in Wermelskirchen geplant.

Abdulkadir Yayci visits Japanese colleagues

From October to December 2019, I was able to join the lab of Prof. Satoshi Hamaguchi at the Center for Atomic and Molecular Technologies in Osaka, Japan. My field of research is applied microbiology and my focus is on  biocatalytic reactions with non-thermal plasmas. Using numerical simulations, I studied the propagation of plasma-induced reactive species in liquids to gain an insight on the depth of penetration and concentration of these species. This knowledge will help to understand the interaction between plasmas and enzymes that are studied in project B8 of the CRC 1316, specifically to protect the enzymes from inactivation and to drive biocatalysis. The research stay in Japan was very helpful to depen my knowledge for my main research question.


JSPS Core-to-core program

Patrick Hermanns visit research group in Osaka

I have visited Hamaguchi Laboratories at Osaka University in Japan for 3 months. The lab exchange was funded partially by the CRC-1316 and the JSPS Core-to-core program. The group of Prof. Satoshi Hamaguchi developed a reaction-diffusion-convection simulation for the generation and transport of chemical species in water, introduced by atmospheric-pressure plasma.

During my stay I worked on a multiphase fluid model. The typical flow field of a turbulent atmospheric-pressure plasma jet in direct vicinity of a liquid was modelled by solving a k-epsilon turbulence model. A Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method was applied for the coupled flow of gaseous and liquid phase. The simulations agree very well with experimental results in the literature. The results from the fluid flow simulations were integrated into the reaction-diffusion-convection equations to evaluate the influence of different flow regimes on the generation and transport of chemical species in the liquid.

In Bochum University, I am working as a PhD-Student within project “B5: 2D-plasma-liquid-solid interfaces – plasma electrolytic oxidation“. The results generated can be useful for this project in regards of chemical species generation inside of liquids. In addition, the fluid flow model is interesting for other groups working with atmospheric-pressure plasmas (e.g. B2: “Self-organization of sub-µm surface structures stimulated by microplasma generated reactive species and short-pulsed laser irradiation“). Summarizing I can say, that I had a very pleasant stay in Osaka, that I personally enjoyed a lot. The cooperation with Hamaguchi Laboratories were very fruitful and everyone was very kind during my stay.



International School on Low Temperature Plasma Physics: Basics and Applications 2019

The traditional summer school on low temperature plasma physics was held in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef and from Octobre 5th, 2019 until Octobre 12th, 2019. The PIs contributed to the lecturing program and new PhD and master students of the CRC1316 attended the school. 


Erasmus student joins CRC 1316 project

Between March 25th and July 19th, 2019 the Erasmus student Roel Michiels visits the research group EP2 of Prof. von Keudell at Ruhr University Bochum. He joins project A3 from the CRC 1316 "Excitation transfer between molecules in transient atmospheric pressure plasmas and its impact on plasma chemistry".

Roel Michiels is associated with the group of Annemie Bogaerts from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Antwerp. He finished his Bachelor thesis last year and prepares now for his Master degree. The topic of his Master thesis is micro kinteic modelling of plasma catalysis. The modelling is done via Density functional theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD).

Together with Theresa Urbanietz, Christoph Stewig, and Steffen Schüttler he tries to gain experience in experimental work in Bochum. His work here focuses on the measurement as well as on the analysis of FTIR spectra gained in the project.


Workshop Electrochemistry

The team of the PI Timo Jacob at university Ulm organized a workshop on the basics and applications of electrochemistry. The similarity to plasma science is striking with the Debye-Hückel theory being at the core of both systems - plasmas and electrochemistry in the electrolyte. Nevertheless, important differences exist, because the boundary layer in the electrolyte in front of an electrode is much more complex than a plasma sheath region. The topics of the workshop ranged from a general introduction to electrochemistry, to methods, to eletcro catalysis up to the theoretical modeling of electrochemical processes. 


07. - 11.10.2018 I 22th International Plasma School

Our series of schools on low temperature plasma physics has been a great success in the last two decades. In 2018, the 22th International School on "Low Temperature Plasma Physics: Basics and Apllications" and its Master Class "Electronegative plasmas" will take place at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany. We are looking forward to it because, once again, we are putting together a very promising program, with support of many colleagues who are willing to give a talk at the School.
